Window Frame Material

Clad-wood replacement windows offer the look of wood windows on the interior, but with minimal exterior maintenance needed. Clad-Wood windows are constructed of wood and have a layer of vinyl or aluminum fixed to   the outside. This eliminates the need for exterior painting or staining over the years.  The inside is wood which can be factory painted or stained. It can also be un-finished if desired. This “best of both worlds” feature is why clad-wood windows a far larger sales volume than wood-only windows.

  • Pros: Energy efficient, durable, low maintenance.
  • Cons: More expensive than vinyl – statistics indicate that cost will not be recouped upon sale of home.

Vinyl windows are probably the most popular type of window. This is due in part to their price point but also due to their associated maintenance costs. They come in variety of colors and will never rot. They typically would be replaced only due to failing of the glass seal or other interior mechanisms.

  • Pros: Energy efficient, durable, low maintenance. Inexpensive
  • Cons: Vinyl can fade over time, Not nearly as many color options as clad-wood.  Less long-term design flexibility.

Unfortunately, this love comes at a price. Wood windows are going to be ( on average ) much more expensive than for a similar style window of a different material.

  • Pros: Energy efficient, Limitless design options. Classic look and feel.
  • Cons: Expensive, requires routine maintenance.
